Why size labels mislead
An “L” from one Chinese seller can fit like an “M” from a European brand, and the next seller’s “L” may be different again. Many sellers’ sizes run smaller than EU or US labels, but there’s no reliable rule. The only safe comparison is centimetres against centimetres.
Measure something you already own
Pick a similar garment that fits you well, lay it flat, and measure it:

| Chest width (pit to pit) | Straight across, from armpit seam to armpit seam. |
| Length | From the highest point of the shoulder, where it meets the collar, down to the hem. |
| Shoulder width | From one shoulder seam to the other, across the back. |
| Sleeve length | From the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff. |
| Waist (trousers) | Straight across the top of the waistband, doubled for the full circumference. |
| Inseam | From the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg. |
Reading a Chinese size chart
- Units: charts are usually in centimetres. Translate the column names if needed.
- Flat width or circumference? Some charts list chest “width” (measured flat) and others the full chest circumference. Circumference is roughly double the flat width.
- Pick by your key measurement: chest width for tops, waist and inseam for trousers, then check the length.
- Between sizes? For a relaxed fit, size up. Remember that exchanges cost time and possibly domestic shipping.
Shoes
Stand on a sheet of paper, mark your heel and longest toe, and measure the distance in millimetres. Compare with the seller’s chart: some list foot length, others insole length. Insoles are usually a little longer than the foot, so leave some room rather than matching exactly.
Ask before you buy, and check after
